RwandaVolcanoes NP
Mountain gorillas in the mist
Five volcanoes rise from a green forest where the world's last wild mountain gorillas live. Trek in for an hour with a habituated family, hike to Dian Fossey's grave, or track golden monkeys in the bamboo zone.
Best: Jun – Sep · Dec – Feb
RwandaLake Kivu
Africa's quiet inland sea
Calm freshwater, terraced hills, and fishing pirogues sliding home at dusk. A perfect place to slow down for two or three nights between gorilla trekking and the rainforests of the south.
Best: Year-round
RwandaNyungwe NP
One of Africa's oldest rainforests
A 1,000-square-kilometre montane rainforest in southern Rwanda. The canopy walkway suspends you 60 metres above the forest floor. Chimpanzee and colobus monkey tracking are the headline activities.
Best: Jun – Sep
KenyaMaasai Mara
Big-cat country and the river crossings
The Mara is Kenya's most famous reserve and the northern terminus of the Great Migration. We work in the private conservancies on the edge of the reserve — fewer vehicles, better off-road access, walking safaris and night drives.
Best: Aug – Oct (Migration) · Jan – Mar (Calving)
KenyaLamu
Swahili coast at dhow pace
Lamu's old town is a UNESCO site — a coral-stone quarter with no cars, just donkeys and the call to prayer. Beyond the town: dhow days, white sand, and reef snorkelling on Manda Bay.
Best: Dec – Mar · Jul – Oct
TanzaniaSerengeti NP
The plains that don't end
The Serengeti is the southern arc of the Migration. Central Serengeti for year-round big cats, the Mara River sector for the dramatic crossings, the Ndutu plains for calving season — we choose the right sector for the right month.
Best: Jun – Oct · Jan – Mar
TanzaniaZanzibar
Spice islands at the end of the safari
Stone Town for the culture, the north coast for the snorkelling, the east coast for the long beaches. A perfect three-to-five-night decompression after a Tanzania or Kenya safari.
Best: Jun – Mar (avoid Apr – May rains)
UgandaBwindi
Half the world's mountain gorillas
Bwindi's gorilla permits are cheaper than Rwanda's (USD 800 vs USD 1,500), and the trekking is more rugged. The forest itself is one of Africa's most biodiverse — Albertine Rift endemic birds, primates, butterflies.
Best: Jun – Sep · Dec – Feb
