The best time to visit Rwanda: month-by-month for gorillas, weather, and price

Rwanda has two dry seasons and two wet seasons. The right month for gorilla trekking is not always the right month for safari or for budget — here is the trade-off, month by month.

Rwanda is on the equator, so there is no winter or summer — but there are two dry seasons and two wet seasons, and they make a real difference to what you can do, what you will pay, and how comfortable the experience is. This guide walks through every month with the trade-offs that actually matter: gorilla trekking conditions, safari game viewing, weather, prices, and crowds.

Rwanda's two dry seasons and two wet seasons

Long dry: June to mid-September. Short dry: mid-December to mid-February. Long rains: March to May (heaviest in April). Short rains: mid-October to mid-December. Temperatures stay between 15 and 28 degrees Celsius year-round — Kigali never gets cold, but the highlands (Volcanoes NP, Nyungwe) can be cool and damp. The wet seasons do not mean all-day rain — usually it is heavy afternoon showers and clear mornings. Outline — full prose to follow in Pass 3A.

When to trek gorillas: every month rated

Best months for gorilla trekking: June, July, August, January, February — dry trails, easier hikes, clearer photography. Worst months: April and November — heavy mud, slipping, gorillas often higher up the volcano. April rates are also the cheapest. The gorillas are there year-round; the question is how hard the trek is, not whether you will see them. Permits are $1,500 USD all year — there is no low-season discount on the permit itself. Outline — full prose to follow in Pass 3A.

Best time for safari (Akagera) and chimps (Nyungwe)

Akagera (big-five savanna park in the east): June-September and December-February are best for game viewing — vegetation is sparse, animals concentrate around water. April-May is lush and green but harder to spot game. Nyungwe (chimps, rainforest, canopy walk): June-September is best for chimp tracking (drier paths). The rainforest is wet year-round so bring waterproofs whenever you go. Outline — full prose to follow in Pass 3A.

Pricing by season — when to save and when to splurge

Lodge prices in Rwanda follow the standard high/shoulder/low season pattern, but the swing is sharper than most African destinations. Top-tier Volcanoes lodges (Bisate, Sabyinyo Silverback, One&Only Gorilla's Nest) charge $2,500-$5,000 per person per night in high season (June-Sept, Dec-Feb), dropping 20-35% in shoulder, and 30-50% in low (April-May). Permits stay flat at $1,500. Internal logistics (vehicle, guide, fuel) are roughly seasonal flat. Outline — full prose to follow in Pass 3A.

Month-by-month summary table

Jan: peak gorilla, peak price. Feb: peak gorilla, peak price, slightly quieter than Jan. Mar: shoulder, wet starting. Apr: low season, wettest. May: low season, wet but improving. Jun: peak gorilla, peak price, dry begins. Jul: peak everything. Aug: peak everything, busiest month. Sep: peak ending, still dry. Oct: shoulder, short rains begin. Nov: shoulder/low, wettest of the second wet season. Dec early: shoulder. Dec late-Jan: peak again. Outline — full prose to follow in Pass 3A.

Frequently asked questions

What is the absolute best month to visit Rwanda?
August — peak dry season, easiest gorilla treks, best game viewing in Akagera, clearest skies for photography. It is also the most expensive and most booked month, so book lodges 6-9 months ahead.
Is April really that bad for visiting Rwanda?
April is the wettest month and the muddiest for gorilla trekking, but it is also the cheapest. If you are fit and prepared to slip in mud for an hour, you can save 40% on lodges and still see gorillas. The trade-off is photography — flat overcast light and waterproofs over your camera.
Does Rwanda have a malaria risk year-round?
Yes — Rwanda has year-round malaria risk in lower-altitude areas (Akagera, Lake Kivu, Kigali). The Volcanoes and Nyungwe highlands are lower-risk because mosquitoes do not thrive at altitude. Take antimalarials regardless of when you travel and which parks you visit.
